What kinds of pages do the trick for new domains?

Do they have to be high pr, does it matter what site its from, how many links to each new site?

I was thinking about writing an article for each new site, and submitting it to 10-20 articles directorys, would that do the trick?

One more thing, Ive noticed that its pretty easy to get the se's to spider your site, but how long untill they actually index it?
