My impression is that these daily backups are intended to get a server running in short order in the event of a catastrophic failure. Large hosting companies often have their own generators so they can continue to provide service during a power failure too. Unfortunately, these things are done to protect the host, not the webmaster. Depending on how these backups were made, your host may not be able to selectively restore one web site, perhaps they cannot do a restore without taking the entire server offline. And I think they expect each webmaster to maintain their own site backup. You are asking them to perform an operation that is potentially risky to other sites on that server and something that is probably not in the Terms of Service you and your host agreed to when you signed up with them. Sorry enotalone, I know this is not what you wanted to hear.
