If you have both pcs on a lan try and search from the other pc and see if it gives the same problem. I don't know if file size is an issue for search, but I know for sure notepad++ has the problem of loading large files as it tries to load the whole file in memory (like many other editors). So if you try to load a file of several GBs (eg to check something in raw server logs) it takes long time to respond and then it gives an error. And it's beyond me why they insist of loading the whole file you try to open in memory.
