I'm the guy who complains about Google favoring sites with more links. I go into great detail on how their linking algorithms are outdated. This is another debate that goes on in other threads. Today I would like to discuss a new topic.
When I type in "generic widget" about 5 sites keep showing up on page 1,2,3,4 approx. They are not exclusive but fill up a good deal of links...
This is how some pages and phrases look on Google:
and so forth...Google really should add to their algorithm a filter that says...only one site listing per 4 pages or whatever...it does the user no good to see the same site over and over.
It does the merchant no good (people like me) when their site rarely shows up ...which affects Google...why? Because they are making some sites tons of money while other sites get the scraps...if I had more revenue coming in I would be spending a great deal on Google adwords, etc...
Of course, putting all of the money in just a few older sites / or big box store sites could be their strategy...but I think that would be flawed because it's never good to put all of your eggs in one basket...
