In the end tax won't be the deciding factor. Deciding factors will be variety, availability, price, shipping and overall convenience. FWIW, Amazon often gets my business because it already hits all those deciding factors, plus product reviews to help me decide
Besides, tax was never an issue for big retailers that already have a physical presence in every state like Walmart, Target, etc. as they already have to charge tax. They're competing by adding free or next to free shipping, like Walmart's $0.97 shipping charge for clothing items, it costs more to drive there than $0.97! Then they use other tricks like free site-to-store shipping or same-day-pickup where you pick it up often mere hours after ordering.
That's why same day shipping from the online giants was inevitable IMO.
