One might expect the NYT to use Times New Roman font, although I understand it was developed by the Times of London.
The way it was explained to me is that serif fonts (e.g. Times) are better for viewing/reading in printed form (e.g. newspaper). Sans-serif fonts (e.g. Verdana) are easier to read on a video screen (e.g. displayed webpage).
