I agree with most of the above post - however, 'ugly' is in the eye of the beholder. I have often done surveys on various publics to find what visual design is most pleasing to the eye...the results invariably amaze me. A color combination or photo that I find hideous, people vote for as the best design for that site. When I used to design sites for clients, I was often frustrated by their choices in colors, photos, visual design.
