Still don't understand a company as large as they are not testing the hel$ out of something before making their "UPGRADES" live. How stupid is that?

It's a really difficult issue. The scale of some of these large sites, such as ebay and paypal, make it essentially impossible to duplicate in a test environment the load levels that the production sites receive. In addition, once an extended outage occurs, it can become very difficult to return a site to service even if the original problem has been resolved, due to the mind-boggling surge of traffic that occurs after such an outage.
