Are there any known issues using Miva Merchant 4 on Unix/Linux servers?

We are bringing up a small e-commerce site on a usually reliable web host. We are experiencing extremely sluggish response on the dynamic pages - both admin (product setup, etc.), and shopping. The server delivers HTML pages just fine - very snappy response. But when we get into Miva mode it's like someone poured sticky syrup in our Cat 5. It may take 10, 15, or more seconds to refresh a page; timeouts happen fairly often.

The host is investigating the problem, but so far is having no success in curing it. Anyone have any ideas? We need to show the site to the client, but we can't do that as it stands...
