So, As for ABOUT US / CONTACT US / etc links... there is also a "convention" that they are likely to be found at the page footer, so why not drop them there?
I found that many issues discussed ehre are covered by Steve Krug in his "Don't make me thinks" book. Very recommended reading for those interested in the topic.
You'd be amazed just how many average surfers don't know about the 'convention' of linking the logo to the home page. They've simply never noticed that it's there!
S.K. notes that although this "convention" is rapidly getting more and more popular, there're still people who look for the HOME link, so why not placing a small HOME text somewhere on the logo image or near/under it. Just everyhere on your site except for the homepage. And it is also important that your main navigation should be simple and prominent, so nobody would actually need to see the homepage.
