I think what Tedster was saying is that most users come in sideways and do not really need to know where 'home' is.

they should know though where they are and what else they can find on the site.

Maybe wasting a special main category link to the index page is in effect not that important. most people who come in through the main page will still use back (and on top of that the IE button?!) so that actually sounds like an argument that one really doesn't need to show the link very big ..
