For comparison purposes:
HTML 1 [w3.org] (June 1993)
HTML 2 [w3.org] (September 1995; authors of 1 and 2 include one T. Berners-Lee whom even I have heard of)
HTML 3.2 [w3.org] (January 1997)
HTML 4.01 [w3.org] (December 1999)
Interesting to find that <cite> and <kbd> aren't new to html 5 after all; they're simply returning after a brief (14 years) absence. The really entertaining one is <font>. Looks as if nobody ever liked it, they were just waiting for an alternative :) Grudgingly introduced in 3.2 ("may be phased out in future revisions"), deprecated in 4, obliterated in 5. Whew.
