Go to the Parameters section of Google Webmaster Tools and tell them to ignore the parameter "example.com".
By default, pages in .html simply ignore query strings. That includes cases where the directory slash / conceals a file called index.html. So that's why the page is coming up as normal.
There is a place in the Apache docs that explains this. I read it within the last two weeks but promptly forgot how it works. Something about PathInfo...
