Try giving a percentage instead. Start with 70% or so, but be sure to try it in assorted fonts. If you are forcing a font family, make sure the backups all have approximately similar ® characters.

Incidentally, ® is in the Latin-1 character set-- the one you declared in the header-- so you don't need to use an entity.
