I was made aware of Seed http://live.gnome.org/Seed [live.gnome.org] though I'm not sure how far along it is. I'm wary of things like Chrome OS/the cloud; files shouldn't be stored exclusively on servers, only on servers if as an opt-in backup option in case a local drive fails. I would imagine all that would really be necessary is a JavaScript API that returns a list of application/OS functions to that can be called.
