I've done XHTML1.1 awhile now. But the simple-minded manner in which I use it amounts largely to grammatical strictness over HTML4.1: lowercase tags, close tags, tags properly nested, attribute values properly cited (even e.g. selected="selected")... My English teacher said, "No split infinitives! Use different *from* and not different *than*!" In MY type of usage, perhaps, XHTML is purely pedantic. Insofar as what real-world browsers will support first, I "suspect" HTML5.
Getting real with myself, I begin to suspect HTML5.
