I imagine that css would become easier with a bit of study but like the OP I have found using it for positioning content an absolute pain. I have adopted it for basic styling but really can't face reworking the templates that I built for my site many years ago using tables. They aren't broken (nor come to that are the font tags on the older pages) so there are better things to do than fix them.
