That's one reason I recommend starting with a subject you know. Because you think you know it, the mistakes and misjudgements are all the more powerful as a reality-check. You don't write them off merely as inexperience. Some stuff hits you out of the blue and makes you rethink your strategies, even after you've been at it a while. <added>
