I am trying affiliate links as a replacement for contextual ads on a content site.
So far, I just replaced existing ads with much the same, except that they are now affiliate links that pay per action rather than PPC ads.
As someone pointed out in another thread, banners are better at creating brand awareness than immediate sales.
So what are the alternatives? I will carry links for three or four different types of services, one or two suppliers of each, and most of them do not serve all countries (and my traffic is diverse). The site is an information/educational site with evergreen content. The ideas I had so far are:
1) Carry on with image ads provided by the various affiliate programs, but geo-target them. Does not sound ideal to me.
2) Create new pages on each type of service, and link to them sitewide from the site navigation.
4) Create new pages per service/supplier, make the links very prominent, but only link from relevant pages.
5) Either 2) or 4), but with the links going direct to the supplier's site.
Does anyone have experience of how well these work, or have any other ideas?
The obvious answer is to test thoroughly, but because the earnings are likely to be very lumpy (high payouts per action, but low conversions of click throughs to actions) meaningful testing will take a very long time. Adsense fluctuates quite a lot on my site day to day, so something that pays a hundred or more times as much, but much less often, than an adsense click, is going to take months to assess.
