As europeforvisitors mentioned a site on French medieval literature probably won't just doesn't have the potential for earning money like a site on cruise travel or networking hardware etc. Building a site on a topic your interested in is all well and good. Ebay was started by auctioning PEZ dispensers. But your best bet is to build a site around a product with high demand and low competition. It should also be a product that tends to sell well on the web. Something you can't get at the local Walmart. Try different things. Domains are disposable. I built a site on nursing bras that went bust (bwah ha ha). Maybe if I had really taken the time to write good content it would have done better, maybe not. Monitor your stats and earnings. Expand on the products that make money and forget about those that don't. I have my share of "passion sites". But when it comes to making money remember "It's business, not personal"
