It can definitely be done. It can take years to find the nuggets that spit out cash day after day and the right way to set everything up. When you do it doesn't take to much work. Test keywords, test creative, test match types, test everything.

After a while you start to recognize patterns, products, site structures, product sorting abilities and other things that make a site convert the traffic you send.

Pick keywords that indicate the person is ready to buy and has done some research or find niche products/services where there are few competitors then fire up an unlimited budget when you find a winner.

It seems like it would be an expensive endeavor to try to start doing this now.
