I'm not really sure why anybody really talks about this it is a non event. The "canonical URL tag" does not solve anything. If you have duplicate content you still have duplicate content. There will also be a lot of people that implement it the wrong way. They will put up two pages with same content other than the fact that they have different "canonical URL tags" A lot of duplicate content isn't exactly the same just 99% the same.
