...they're basically charging you a monthly rate for the upgrade that's nearly the same as what it would cost you to buy the part in the first place!

Checking the lowest tier dedicated server, the upgrade from 2GB of ram to 4GB costs an extra $50/month. However, once configured, the total cost looks like a good deal of performance for the price.
