I think its a simple case of supply meeting demand, don't you?
Fact of the matter is Google has the lion's share of the search engine market, it's the #1 search engine people try to optimize for, and if you get a high listing it can be the #1 source of traffic. So... why not?

Who put Google on the pedestal? It's users/customers... no one else.

When you say 'beast' do you mean in its dominance? Or is that in a negative connotation?

I would say the real 'beast' is Microsoft, at least Google delivers quality products, albeit it practically has become a monopoly... but at least it gives users value in my opinion.
