It helps to make friendships with some users. I have been to four Pubcons and I knew a few users before I went to the first one. Going to Pubcon may not be possible for everyone, but you can make friendships online and get additional value, e.g. several WW members are on my IM list and I speak to some by phone.

My posts have been edited up to two years ago but now I have a better idea of what to say and where I can say it.
