Also a warm welcome from me to the European forums at WebmasterWorld.

As Rumbas already explained it's generally very hard to find good data about SE usage and especially numbers about the userbase.

I generally use the following sources to estimate the actual number:
Webhits [webhits.de]
Etracker [etracker.de]

Both are counter services that a lot of people use and are mainly used within german speaking websites. The only disadvantage is that a lot of SEMs use these counters as well. And due to the fact that they mainly optimize for Google the data is a bit wrong as well.

The Nielsen numbers are no SE usage data imho. That's probably why they're so low.

I hope I could add a bit more information to what Rumbas already said.
