I have spent about $200, only arround that area.
the conclusion is it depends:
the search engine you are targeting (exalead doesn't work like Google, ...)
the consumers you are targeting (the one who is just looking for info about your products will not use the same keywords when buying)

So spend some money on Google and Overture then analyse your logs. you will get the answer to your own situation.
(I am n1 on those KW applied to my business)
