---- How Does a Directory Build Up it's Pagerank?

First, I'd say "forget toolbar Pagerank". Put it out of your head. Why? Because Pagerank is a somewhat pathetic "selling point" and probably the worst selling point to be promoting. Why? Because what Google grants Google can just as easily wipe away AND because the Pagerank is typically nothing more than index.htm or homepage Pagerank. Woohoo! So, what else ya got?

If you insist on knowing then check their backlink profile.

Given what you said about the age of the directories you probably already have your answer about just how much Pagerank matters in the context of what you are seeing. In the context of what you are seeing the (toolbar) Pagerank pretty much shows itself to mean nothing - except to the knuckleheads and chuckleheads who go about trumpeting about their directory's Pagerank.
