Perhaps the new DMOZ could include some simple stats at the bottom of each cat/page.

No of submissions waiting in the queue.
No of rejected submissions
+ the date each of these last changed

This would help the outside world see the pressures the editors in some sections are under as I'm sure the pressure/interest isn't homogeneous.
