Any functioning web client (including both real browsers and industrial-strength spiders like googlebot) HAVE to be able to handle that situation.
If your sysadmin has a clue and a bucket to carry it in (as it sounds like), and has set up the www.example.com to redirect to example.com with a 301 permanent redirect (as it sounds like), then it doesn't make a difference.
