The boot-to-desktop option while nice is no big deal because I never reboot the machine except when MS sends a pile of updates.
The problem is programs in metro can't run on the desktop, they really messed up there and the UI for things like paint aren't regular programs anymore, real PITA.
They should've taken some clues from RWD and built programs that have the appropriate windows and tool bars for the desktop or metro depending on how it's launched. Not that complicated, even a freelancer could do it...
