Thumbnails have been legislated as FAIR-USE.

"NOT-thumbnail" is NOT-FAIR-USE.

Thumbnails-only the only LEGAL way for Pinterest to operate. Until they shrink all the infringing images (which is 99% of all images), Pinterest is an internet pirate.
