Not all themes are created equal either... I stick with Premium themes as they are better supported and kept up-to-date when WordPress updates. Support will be priceless -- especially if you are new to WordPress. Clean code also lends to less conflicts and security risks as well.
The key is to go through a site's demo with a fine tooth comb so that you know how things layout and that the included functionality and widgets are what you need/want.
When you find a theme that you believe you want to use, do a search for that specific theme's name on Google to see what is out there from other users.
