There are only two metrics to measure the performance of the site, one is alexa & another is Page rank by Google.

If the market is selling (widely considered useless) links from directories, blogrolls etc... then these two factors probably help in achieving the goal.

The problem is that these very sites also boast about these metrics which can raise eyebrows of people investigating backlink profiles.
