Turning your psd into WP theme is really not that hard, you might even like it after a little practice. There are several great online services that take your psd and turn it into a theme. You just have to specify the areas, content, navigation and special features such as plugin stuff (that requires specific css too).
Is there anything I should watch for in this process?
It will depend on your needs and taste. I make my own themes, and in this case I would ask for the same result: remove extra codes, clean design, WP adds a lot of meta tags that I don't like (yes I know) specially any trace of "made or powered by wordpress" and would also ask for removal of stuff my site won't use, such as those dupplicated listings or archives. That is just my opinion.
search a bit, some offer a plus, 100% valid code and cross browser compatible, perhaps that's important to you in a diff level.
