Brand New laptops might be new but they are almost always outdated because they have sat in a warehouse or store for weeks if not months. Very common for Adobe Flash, Java, and Microsoft OS to be outdated by the time the computer is sold. So, it could very easily become infected the minute it's used on the Internet.
