They NEED to do it, and do it SOON! Somebody needs to put up competition to Google, who has made a mess of a once decent search product and is killing small businesses in droves.
This is most likely the Page/Brin absolute worst nightmare scenario, and why they have been tearing their search engine apart to make it 'unique'. Google got to where they are by providing the backend search results for the number 1 web destination (Yahoo). So if the number one web destination today (facebook) decides to just pay even lip service to web search, Google will start to lose share. If they actually pursue dominance in Search, Google will lose share faster (e.g. Toolbar, search facebook or web select menu on the current FB search box). All that is extremely easy with the current Bing back end. And Bing already integrates FB results, so it is a win win situation if they push people out to Bing rather than letting them use the Google search box. Maybe they could even get a revenue share of FB generated search PPC. This seems to be a no-brainer, so I wonder what is stopping them from doing it?
Facebook also has the opportunity to provide a completely unique set of search results by providing a search of FB pages with the possibility of ranking by popularity. Very large opportunities here.
FB is a public company that's told a bad story so far, so they'll have to pursue revenue generating features a great deal more than they have in the past, at the expense of pie in the sky or non-core business type features (e.g. the recent announcement that there will not be a facebook mobile phone)
