Your default browser tends to use the most memory, and have the most problems simply because you use it more.
I have no problems running Chrome + FF + a lot else in 4GB but different OS and different usage are not comparable. What do you do that requires so much memory?
Chrome was never that light in terms of memory usage (especially on Windows, I think) because of its multiple processes.
There are lightweight browsers, but they do not have the availability of extensions etc. that Chrome and FF do. You could try something like Midori.
