I use to recommend vBulletin till they screwed all their customers over with this new corporate management by saying "lifetime" licenses are no longer lifetime. I wouldn't recommend them. If you must use vBulletin, use the 3.X series as it's the best. Not only has the price of the 4.X series gone through the roof (you still have to pay it to use 3.X though), they've also bloated the thing more than it already was and turned it into utter crap. It's now a major headache to skin and they released the series with thousands of bugs, many of which still remain. I won't even begin to rant about the number of queries the lame excuse for a CMS uses. I was a dedicated vBulletin customer for many years but am currently writing my own solution, VB is just not what it use to be.
