Obviously there needs to be new solutions. The forums traffic isn't doing the best, user participatation is at an all time low. If you keep saying no to everything people, you'll be talking to yourselves.
I think voting, rating and sorting by popularity, interest and usefulness is what has revolutionized the Internet and put WebmasterWorld in the dust. I still love this site by the way. :)
For all the naysayers (long time users) make them happy by making the default view as the timeline that is. Show what Webmasterworld WAS. Then provide a sorting feature for ratings so that the best can rise to the top.
Can of worms? Too hard? Boo hoo. Success is innovation you lazy old coots. Do something different become something different, do the same, die the same.
It's not that hard to get a quality voting system in place. Consult Digg, Tweetmeme, Popurls, Reddit, StumbleUpon, it's been proven to drive those sites to the top of the pack in content quality.
People don't have the time anymore to trudge around on one forum. Back in the day WebmasterWorld use to be THE resource, it's just a ripple in the pond now.
Next up is that you MUST, absolutely MUST add social media integration. Each post should have the ability to share on Twitter and Facebook. In some ways, this could be your rating system. If it has been shared by someone on their unique and public social account they obviously found it valuable.
This would build an incredible reference of backlinks and mentions into the social world for WebmasterWorld and bridge the old with the new.
Voting / Social = the most vital thing you could do for WebmasterWorld.com to see a rise in participation and site use. I guarantee it. The old coots can spin in their dusty old computer rooms, while people like me are dashing through the real world using mobile devices, laptops, tvs and tablets to check in at WebmasterWorld.
