For paid members minimal advertising to important events and vendors like you have now are fine.
As a matter of fact, as a paid member I wouldn't mind you alerting me to new industry books, software, conferences, etc. in some form or another, just not random AdSense of DoubleClick ads.
I see no problem shoving ads out there for the free members, just the cost of doing business.
Maybe make a new pay point for "ad free" that's affordable, much less than supporters members, just ad free for those that want it.
