...plus a black screen with the cursor working!
This isn't Windows 7 64 bit, but it is a black screen problem I had with the XP updates last night.
This happened to me after yesterday's updates for XP Pro SP3... there were 14 of them, including many for Office 2003, which is the version I have. I'm not sure which update caused the problem.
After the install, which I thought was complete, the machine seemed to work fine, then froze up during a virus scan. The black screen wouldn't response to anything, including the power button, and I ultimately had to shut the system down by switching off the power supply. When I turned it back on and restarted Windows, I got a message that there was one update yet to be installed. After I installed it, all went OK.
Everything about the updates was glitchy in minor ways... the download took a few tries... there was a "couldn't install" message that flashed by and then disappeared during the installation process... and the status messages and the moving green progress bar were completely out of sync. But I did get something I took for an "installation completed" message at the end of the process.
I wonder if there's an "update watch" online to check status on these updates? Frankly, I dread updating software. It's got a lot better than it used to be, but it's still a source of trouble. When the first download didn't work, I should have just given it an extra week and see if anyone else reported problems. All seems to be working OK now, though.
