It amazes me that Microsoft didn't produce the entire device hardware and software, they saw a gap in the games market and introduced Xbox, why didn't they invent the device that they obviously saw was going to be the future?
I don't think anyone saw tablets as an obvious future.
Bill Gates in 2001: "The tablet takes cutting-edge PC technology and makes it available whenever you want it...It's a PC that is virtually without limits — and within five years I predict it will be the most popular form of PC sold in America."
They predicted that the tablet all right, and they didn't do much but build a meh OS for it, and expect hardware manufacturers to make killer hardware for it... Which never happened.
