Actually developing search technology and software is a lot different to developing something simple like a browser. With a browser you only have to worry about displaying the data. With search you have to classify the data and put it context. Right now, Microsoft's search offering sucks and it is so far behind Google and Yahoo that it is no longer a laughing matter. The move on Yahoo was a good one but it was rebuffed. And even Rupert Murdoch wants in on Yahoo's action in the hope that he can trade up Newscorp's holding into Yahoo stock.
