What's the advantage of using these plugins? I see them utilised by CMS plugins a lot, but they are unnecessary. I only ever use a couple of lines of code to invoke either Flash or Windows media players.

If you want to play "privately hosted videos" are you happy about inbuilt options to save/download your media.
