Not so much now but over the years there have been comments from folks about how to trick link partners. They may use tricky linking that doesn’t allow the partner to receive credit along with other karmic bad link ideas. Remember the discussion Search Engines' Stance Against SEO Is Shaky At Best [webmasterworld.com], where we talked about over optimization. I was reminded from your comment, “one's fearful and mercenary SEO personality”. Great line and another good read for folks who have the time.
