Same template wouldn't normally be a problem. If you look at wordpress sites, there are hundreds of thousands of sites that use the same template. For example, Atahualpa theme has been downloaded 992,350 times :)

But still it doesn't mean that template is not an issue. If you have specific examples of two or more websites with different content but with same templates and that both rank well, then I'd be happy to look at them. Because I think "unique" content also means the structure, if your structure is not duplicated throughout the web then you are less likely to be a farm...
