@maddawg - sorry for the late reply, i went to sleep on this thread.
If the focus is on relevant, high quality content and relationships then the strategy starts to form.
A specific scenario might be, you sell a product. The product is important to a particular group. Write an article with a compelling angle on it, that benefits the group. The better the content the more likely you will be to market it. Get them to link back to you in recognition of the article.
Then build the relationship with more articles, or responses to the article from other's. Along the way you may be refered to someone else who is an authority and you can build another angle on this.
Don't call it link baiting , call it relationship marketing. Then you can allow yourself to expand into a strategy that is complimented with social.
But really it comes down to your creativity and the value of what you can come up with.
