Prime examples that I have seen in my field (music) are bands who don't mention location or genre so if you are a rock band in Freedonia you need to say that you are in Freedonia and play rock 'n' roll. If you don't all the links in the world won't make you rank for "rock band in Freedonia".

Get the content right and the link juice will give you an edge, get the content wrong and it is worthless.
