Hope I'm not just making noise... again!

My boss has asked me to start looking into getting sites to run competitions to promote our products. The idea being they set up a competition, we provide the prizes i.e. signed books, posters etc and they put a link to our site.

One of the sites who have done this have placed our link on a PR9 page, but will only be doing this 4 a few weeks.
Will we have any chance of long term PR improvments from this page.
We aim to have dozens and dozens of comps running at anyone time will all this potential PR go to waste?

Anyone else use competitions for marketing/traffic driving/PR gains ?
Is it working for you?
